How does stamp duty (imposta di bollo) will work on my Qonto account?

  • Updated

If you received a legal notice from Qonto and would like more information about stamp duty, keep reading.

What is stamp duty?

Stamp duty (imposta di bollo) is a tax required by Italian law on bank account statements. Starting November 17, 2026, with Qonto's transition from a Payment Institution to a Credit Institution (subject to authorization by the competent authorities), we will collect the tax on your behalf and pay it to the Italian tax authority (Agenzia delle Entrate). Qonto does not earn anything from it. Nothing will be charged for periods before November 17, 2026.

Stamp duty will apply to Qonto accounts with an Italian IBAN only.

How much will it be?

Customer typeConditionAnnual amount
Companies and other legal entitiesAlways due, except for organizations registered in the RUNTS (Italian national register of the Third Sector), which are exempt€118
Individuals, including freelancers and sole proprietorsAverage annual balance of the year just ended, calculated across all your accounts, above €5,000€34.20

The stamp duty will be calculated separately for each account with an Italian IBAN, including your main account and any secondary accounts. The debit will always be taken from your main account:

Annual amount ÷ 365 × days active

We will divide by 365; in a leap year we will divide by 366. Both the activation day and the closing day are counted. Each charge will be at least €1. In 2026, the duty will only apply from November 17: earlier days will not be counted. If you open a new account during the year, you will only pay from its activation day.

When will it be charged?

  1. Every year on January 1, for the previous year. The first debit will be on January 1, 2027 and will cover November 17 to December 31, 2026.
  2. When you close a secondary account (web only): we will charge the duty for that IBAN up to the closing date.
  3. When closure of your Qonto account is requested, by you or by Qonto: we will charge the duty due up to the closing date. If you request the closure, your account is closed the day after your request. If Qonto starts the closure, the notice period is 60 days.

We will always debit your main account. VAT on stamp duty will be 0%.

Where will I be able to see the charge?

In Transactions, you will see a transaction named Stamp duty (Imposta di bollo) for each IBAN once the amount has been debited. The details will show the last 4 digits of the IBAN whose stamp duty is due. The monthly invoice PDF, issued on the 1st of the following month (or the last invoice if your account is closed), will be attached to the transaction.

Examples

  • Freelancer with one main account active for the full year: on January 1, 2027 you will pay €34.20 ÷ 365 × 365 = €34.20.
  • Freelancer with one main account and one secondary account (secondary account opened on December 1, 2026): on January 1, 2027 you will pay two separate charges:
    • Main account (active all year): €34.20 ÷ 365 × 365 = €34.20
    • Secondary account (active 31 days): €34.20 ÷ 365 × 31 = €2.90
  • Company closing a secondary account (active January 1 to June 30, 2027, so 181 days): at closing you will pay €118 ÷ 365 × 181 = €58.52, debited from the main account. The main account, active all year, will pay €118 on January 1, 2028.
  • Company closing its Qonto account (active January 1 to March 31, 2027, so 90 days): when closure is requested you will pay €118 ÷ 365 × 90 = €29.10.

What if I cancel the closure of my account?

The stamp duty already charged will not be refunded, because it is due. From the day after the planned closing date we will prorate again and charge the remaining part of the year on January 1.

What if my balance is not enough?

The debit will stay pending (waiting funds) and will be retried. A partial amount may be charged if possible.
